The Wolf — The Heart That Protects

$2,300.00

2026 · Black ink and watercolor on paper
59 × 80 cm · 23.2 × 31.5 in

I began drawing this Wolf after a long pause in my practice — slowly, over several months, in the stillness of my studio. It felt like a quiet return to something I had been missing.

I had always wanted to draw my partner’s Power Animal. As the piece emerged, I found myself thinking about the qualities I associated with him: protection, loyalty, instinct, and a quiet strength.

His gaze became central to the drawing — strong and alert, but softened by tenderness. From his chest, I allowed the heart to expand outward into branching forms, expressing a love that felt generous, protective, and expansive.

The colors came from the landscape surrounding me in Portugal: teal, green, and purple, drawn from the ocean and coastal light. I chose the three colors before making a single mark and carried them through every layer of the piece.

Symbolism

The wolf carries a powerful tension: fiercely instinctive and independent, yet deeply connected to family, loyalty, and the pack.

In this work, the Wolf became both a presence and a mirror — an image of protection, belonging, devotion, and the quieter forms of strength that are often felt more than seen.

The expanding heart at the center of the piece became a symbol of love as something active: not only something we feel, but something that protects, holds, and stands beside us.

What might the Wolf awaken in us about the ways we protect, belong, trust, and love?
