Celestial Union began as an exploration of partnership.

The wolf was my partner’s Power Animal, and I became curious about what it would feel like to portray two wolves together — not simply as a pair, but as a pack formed through love.

From the beginning, I imagined them as two distinct energies. He was connected to the sun, warmth, and fire. He called me Menina da Lua — girl of the moon — and I had always felt deeply connected to the moon, the ocean, and the quieter, more fluid qualities they hold.

The two wolves grew from that contrast: one carrying the energy of sun and fire, the other moon and ocean. Opposite forces, but also complementary ones — each retaining its own nature while meeting the other in the space between them.

By the time I was working on the piece, however, the relationship itself had begun to unravel.

I had already spoken about ending it, and the distance that followed made the drawing unexpectedly difficult. Working on the wolves became meditative, painful, and cathartic all at once. I was tracing an image of union while simultaneously experiencing its dissolution.

When I later returned to the work in color, something shifted. The piece no longer felt like an attempt to preserve the relationship. Instead, it became a way of honoring what had existed — the beauty, the love, the polarity, and eventually the release.

Symbolism

Wolves are deeply social animals, forming bonds through loyalty, cooperation, protection, and shared belonging.

In Celestial Union, the two wolves hold both connection and individuality. The sun and moon do not become one; fire does not become water. Their relationship exists precisely because each remains distinct.

For me, the piece came to hold a different understanding of union: not as permanence, and not as losing oneself inside another, but as the meeting of two complete beings whose paths intersect, transform one another, and sometimes separate again.

The celestial imagery became a way of holding these opposites — masculine and feminine, fire and water, closeness and distance, love and release — without needing one to erase the other.

What might it mean to honor a connection without needing to hold onto it forever?
