The Deer — Whisper of the Forest
2026 · Black ink and watercolor on paper
49 × 65 cm · 19.3 × 25.6 in
This piece began with Artemis — the Greek goddess of the wilderness, the moon, and wild animals. The deer was sacred to her, moving through the forest as both companion and protected being.
I was drawn to that image of the deer: gentle, alert, and completely belonging to the wild — moving according to its own rhythm.
The antlers became the heart of the composition. Rather than treating them simply as part of the animal, I allowed them to grow outward into branches, flowers, insects, and birds — almost as though an entire forest were living within her crown.
This was also the first piece in which I introduced color into this body of work. Before making a single mark, I chose three colors: magenta, orange, and a particular pink that immediately brought me back to Mexico — the color of bugambilia, rosa mexicano, and birds of paradise.
As I worked, the palette began to feel like a kind of homecoming: the wildness of the deer intertwined with memories of another landscape.
Symbolism
The deer carries a particular kind of presence — sensitive and watchful, yet able to move through the world with extraordinary softness.
Across mythology and cultural traditions, deer have often appeared at thresholds: between wilderness and civilization, the visible and unseen, stillness and movement. They have been connected with grace, intuition, renewal, and the ability to remain receptive without losing awareness.
In this piece, the Deer became a meeting point between gentleness and wildness. Her antlers hold an ecosystem of their own, suggesting that sensitivity is not fragility, but another way of being deeply attuned to the world around us.
What might the Deer awaken in us about moving through the world with sensitivity, awareness, and grace?
