The Stork, 2020 Black ink and graphite on paper
I drew the Stork shortly after I moved to Portugal, at a moment when everything familiar had fallen away. I was leaving behind my New York identity — the version of myself shaped by a city, a rhythm, and relationships that no longer fit who I was becoming. Standing in a new country, I felt both untethered and hopeful.
That time was full of grief. Grief for relationships I had to release, for versions of myself I needed to shed, for a life that had been meaningful but was complete. Underneath the sadness there was a quieter stirring — a readiness to begin again, even though I didn't yet know how.
I drew the bird slowly, over many evenings, and as I drew I felt myself moving through the shedding. The Stork emerged carrying both vulnerability and strength — a body made of lines I put down when I had nothing else to do with my hands.
This is the drawing I keep coming back to when people ask which piece means the most to me.
Storks have moved through human imagination as figures of arrival, renewal, and the long migrations between worlds. In ancient Egyptian belief they were associated with the soul; in European folklore they carry new life into homes; in many traditions they stand for the threshold between endings and beginnings. With their slow, deliberate flight and their seasonal returns, they have long been seen as creatures who hold the rhythm of leaving and arriving — beings shaped by passage.
