The Puffin, 2021 Black ink and graphite on paper
When I first drew the Puffin, I was thinking about resilience. A small seabird that survives cold oceans, rough winds, and long migrations — yet still carries bright color on its beak.
This week, I read heartbreaking news: puffins and other seabirds have been washing ashore across parts of Europe, many starving after severe storms disrupted their ability to find food. This piece now feels like a quiet tribute to these remarkable birds and the fragile beauty they bring to our world.
Puffins spend most of their lives at sea, diving deep beneath rough waters to catch fish and returning each year to the same cliffs to nest — often to the same burrow, with the same partner. They mate for life, reuniting silently after months apart on the open ocean. In folklore, they've been seen as figures of devotion, joy, and the quiet endurance of creatures who belong to two worlds at once — sea and sky, solitude and return. Their resilience is real, but not limitless. Their survival is tied to the care we bring to the living world around us.
