The Porcupine, 2022 Black ink and graphite on paper
I've always been drawn to the porcupine — an animal that carries both softness and defense in the same body. Drawing her, I wanted to hold that duality: the quills that protect, the gentle face underneath, the flowers and butterflies blooming from her back as if tenderness and boundary could exist in the same breath.
Porcupines have moved through myth and folklore as figures of innocence armed with wisdom. In many Indigenous traditions of the Americas, porcupine quills were sacred — used in ceremony, in art, in adornment — a material that came from an animal who never attacks, only defends. The porcupine carries an old teaching: that sensitivity and self-protection are not opposites, and that the softest creatures are sometimes the ones best equipped to hold their ground.
