Parakeets, 2017 Black ink and graphite on paper
Two parakeets on a branch, leaning into each other. I drew them close — bodies touching, heads tilted inward — because that's how they are. Parakeets don't just sit near their partner. They press against them. They preen each other's feathers, they share food beak to beak, they call for each other when one flies out of sight. The closeness isn't performative. It's how they survive.
Drawing this pair, I wanted the linework to mirror that tenderness — the patterns on one body flowing into the other, so the eye moves between them without knowing exactly where one ends and the other begins.
Parakeets are among the most devoted partners in the animal world. Many species mate for life, and the bond between a pair is visible — they sit together, eat together, sleep pressed side by side. In many cultures they've been seen as figures of love, not as an ideal but as a daily practice — the kind of devotion that shows up in small, repeated gestures rather than grand declarations. Their song is not solo. It's a conversation.
