The Howling Wolf

from $48.00

The Howling Wolf, 2013 Black ink and graphite on paper

I drew the Howling Wolf soon after I moved to New York, in a season when my heart felt split open from a breakup. I was carrying so much grief and didn't know where to place it. At the time I was reading Women Who Run with the Wolves, and through those stories I started to remember something fierce and soft at the same time — a wildness I'd been keeping quiet.

As I drew, every small detail felt like a way to pour that pain into something beautiful. Line by line, the howl became a release, a way of saying: I am still here. Now, facing another moment of transition, this piece calls me back to her again — the one who knows how to honor grief, feel the sadness fully, and turn it into something alive.

Wolves who howl are not crying — they are locating each other. A howl travels miles through darkness, and the pack answers. Across cultures the howling wolf has stood for the voice that refuses to stay silent, for grief expressed rather than buried, and for the deep instinct to call out and be found. In many traditions the wolf's howl is not sorrow but connection — the sound of an animal who knows that loneliness is not the same as being alone.
