Hedgehogs, 2026 Black ink and graphite on paper
A month ago, on a morning run in Ericeira, I came across a mother hedgehog on the road — run over, still curled around her baby. Even after everything, her body was holding on. I stood there with the same thoughts looping: if I had arrived a few minutes earlier, could I have stopped them from crossing? I couldn't. And that helplessness stayed with me.
So I did the only thing I know how to do when an image won't leave — I turned it into a drawing. I placed the baby exactly where I found them, tucked into her chest. I wrapped them in moons and stars, surrounded them with foliage like a small altar. The patterns across her body became a shield — a visual echo of the protection she offered until her final breath.
A tribute. A way of saying: I saw you. You mattered. Your love was real.
