The Giraffes, 2018 Black ink and graphite on paper
I drew these giraffes after visiting the Serengeti — after seeing them move in person for the first time. Nothing prepares you for the slowness of a giraffe. They cross the landscape like they're moving through water, every step deliberate, their necks swaying with a grace that doesn't match their size. I watched them standing together, heads high above the acacia line, and I kept thinking: they see everything from up there. Everything.
Drawing two of them together felt right — the way they stand close, necks intertwining, watching in different directions. I wanted the piece to hold that quality: alertness without anxiety, height without separation from the ground.
Giraffes are the tallest living animals on earth, and yet they are among the quietest — they were once believed to have no voice at all. In many African traditions they are associated with vision, foresight, and the ability to see what others cannot yet see. Their hearts weigh over 11 kilograms — the largest of any land animal — built to pump blood all the way up that extraordinary neck. They are, in every sense, creatures of perspective: rooted to the earth, seeing from the sky, and carrying a heart large enough to bridge the distance between the two.
