The Fox, 2015 Black ink and graphite on paper
The fox is one of those animals I return to for the sheer pleasure of drawing — the sharp face, the fluid body, the tail that seems to carry its own weather. In this piece, I wanted to hold the fox in a moment of stillness, surrounded by the flora and creatures that share her world, as if the drawing itself were a small clearing she'd wandered into.
Foxes have appeared in the mythology of nearly every culture as figures of intelligence, adaptability, and the kind of knowing that lives closer to instinct than reason. In Japanese tradition the fox is a shapeshifter; in European folklore, she outwits every hunter; in many Indigenous traditions of the Americas she is the one who moves between worlds unseen. What stays constant across all of them is the sense of a creature whose wisdom is not loud — it whispers, it watches, it waits for the right moment, and then it moves with precision and grace.
