The Elephant

The Elephant, 2018 Black ink and graphite on paper

What drew me to this piece was the relationship between the elephant and the bird — the small creature perched on the great one, completely at ease. It's one of the images I find most beautiful in the natural world: the symbiosis between large and small, where both benefit and neither dominates. The bird feeds, the elephant is cleaned, and the trust between them is quiet and total.

Drawing the elephant's body was slow, dense work — the patterns building outward from the eye, layering across the skin like a map of something ancient. The bird arrived late in the drawing, almost as an afterthought, but once it was there the piece made sense. Without it, the elephant was a portrait. With it, it became a relationship.

Elephants carry some of the deepest archetypal weight in human imagination. They are figures of wisdom, memory, and the kind of strength that expresses itself through gentleness. In Hindu tradition, Ganesha — the remover of obstacles — takes the elephant's form. Across Africa they are matriarchs, keepers of ancestral knowledge, and mourners of their dead. Their capacity for empathy is well documented — they grieve, they comfort, they return to the bones of family members years after death. And yet what moves me most is their willingness to be in relationship with creatures a fraction of their size — a patience and openness that has nothing to prove.
