The Deer, 2017 Black ink and graphite on paper
This piece was inspired by Artemis — the Greek goddess of the wilderness, the moon, and all wild animals. The deer was sacred to her, moving through the forest as her companion and protected being. I was drawn to that image and wanted to hold it in the drawing: a creature who belongs to the wild, untouchable, moving with its own rhythm. The antlers became the heart of the piece. I let them grow outward into branches, flowers, insects, and birds — a small forest living in her crown. It's the way I felt the connection: the deer not separate from the wilderness, but carrying it. I originally called this drawing "Artemisa," and though the title shifted, the spirit stayed.
Deer have moved through human imagination as figures of grace, gentleness, and the wild presence that cannot be domesticated. Across cultures they appear as messengers between worlds — sacred to Artemis in Greek myth, to the Celtic goddess Flidais, to many Indigenous traditions of the Americas where the deer is keeper of the forest. With their alertness, their soft strength, and the way they move through the woods almost without sound, they have long been seen as creatures who belong fully to a world beyond human reach.
