The Butterfly, 2020 Black ink and graphite on paper
I drew this for a friend who came to one of my workshops during a time of big transition in her life. The butterfly surfaced for her during the drum journey, and afterwards I took the image home and made it into a drawing — not one butterfly, but a whole flight of them, some close and fully detailed, others drifting toward the edges of the paper.
I wanted the piece to feel like movement caught mid-air. At the base of the drawing there's a small world holding everything up: leaves, seed pods, mushrooms, crystals. I like the way a drawing can have a ground and a sky at once, and how something delicate in the air needs something solid underneath it to feel possible.
This is one of the most detailed pieces I've made. The graphite on some of the smaller butterflies gives them a slightly softer weight than the ink ones — closer or further away, depending on how you look.
