The Black Panther and her Cub, 2024 Black ink and graphite on paper
This drawing came out of a commission. I was working with someone on a piece that was meant to hold something protective for her, and during the quiet part of our session together, the image of a panther walking with her cub surfaced — two dark bodies moving close, one adult, one small. She also asked me to include a crystal in the drawing, something that mattered to her personally, and I drew it into the lower left where it catches the light between the foliage.
I've always liked drawing big cats. There's a stillness to them, a contained attention, that feels like the opposite of how most of us live. Drawing this pair slowly, over several weeks, I kept coming back to the way the cub stays close without being told — the kind of closeness that doesn't need instruction.
