The Black Panther, 2023 Black ink and graphite on paper
This was the first piece I made as a Power Animal portrait — drawn for a friend who identified deeply with the black panther. She was reconnecting to her own power and voice, and wanted an image that could hold that intention for her. The panther felt right immediately: silent, watchful, unafraid of the dark. I drew her thinking about what it means to move through the world with quiet confidence, to trust your instincts, to meet the unknown without needing to announce yourself. This drawing opened something in my practice — it became the beginning of the series that followed.
Black panthers have held a place in human imagination as figures of watchful stillness, protection, and power held in reserve. They move through mythology as guardians — beings who see without being seen, who act only when they must. In Mesoamerican traditions, the jaguar was associated with night, sovereignty, and the threshold between worlds; across Africa and Asia, the black panther carries similar weight as a creature of the unseen. Hers is a strength that doesn't need to be witnessed to be real.
