The Deer 2026 — Black ink and watercolor on paper
This piece began with Artemis — the Greek goddess of the wilderness, the moon, and all wild animals. The deer was sacred to her, moving through the forest as her companion and protected being. I was drawn to that image: a creature who belongs to the wild, untouchable, moving with its own rhythm. The antlers became the heart of the composition. I let them grow outward into branches, flowers, insects, and birds — a small forest living in her crown.
For this piece I introduced color for the first time — three colors chosen before a single mark was made. Magenta, orange, and a particular pink that belongs to Mexico — the color of bugambilia, the typical rosa mexicano, and birds of paradise. The palette arrived as a homecoming.
Deer have moved through human imagination as figures of grace, gentleness, and wild presence. Across cultures they appear as messengers between worlds — sacred to Artemis in Greek myth, to the Celtic goddess Flidais, to many traditions of the Americas where the deer is keeper of the forest.
