The Elephants, 2018 Black ink and graphite on paper
I drew these two elephants touching trunks because that gesture says everything about what elephants are — the way they greet each other, comfort each other, and confirm each other's presence through touch. I've always been moved by the depth of their bonds. They mourn their dead, they return to the bones of family members years later, they walk slower when one of the herd is injured. Their loyalty is not abstract. It lives in the body.
Elephants have carried some of the deepest meaning in human imagination. In Hindu tradition, Ganesha — the remover of obstacles — takes the form of an elephant. Across Africa they are figures of wisdom, matriarchy, and ancestral memory. They are among the few animals known to grieve, to weep, and to recognize themselves in mirrors. With the largest brain of any land animal and social bonds that last a lifetime, they've long been seen as keepers of something ancient — a memory that stretches across generations, carried not in words but in presence, in touch, and in the slow rhythm of walking together.
